Seed donation to support food production & security

With the rainy season fast approaching, the Ondangwa Urban Constituency in the Oshana Region has embarked on a seed-collecting project.

It is appealing to donors to donate a variety of seeds that will be distributed among residents of the constituency to help them establish backyard gardens.

The constituency councillor, Elia Irimari, told Ewi lyaNooli that the regional government is collaborating with agriculture experts who are willing to help people establish their own kitchen gardens.

“The Ondangwa Urban Constituency is hosting a seed drive to support food production in our communities. We are in need of variety of seeds for our local people to grow their own food in their backyards,”Irimari said.

“We are therefore appealing to individuals, corporate organisations, institutions or government entities to help by donating any type of vegetable or fruit seeds to make our project a success.”

Irimari said the aim was to strive for food security and fight poverty and hunger.

Donors can either deliver the seed to his office opposite the Ruben Michael Danger Ashipala Police Training Centre at Ondangwa, or call Irimari at 081 255 3064.

“We are approaching the rainy season and we would like our people to start with rainwater, so that after the rain their gardens will be ready for harvesting or will only need minimal water,” he said.

He said a committee would monitor the progress of these gardens.

In July this year, environment minister Pohamba Shifeta urged Namibians to work hard and ensure that we produce at least 30% of our food consumption.
