Progress made on delayed Nkurenkuru clinic

29 July 2020 | Local News

New contractors have been appointed to complete the outstanding work on the delayed Nkurenkuru Primary Healthcare Clinic, which was supposed to be completed five years ago.

Kavango chief medical officer Dr Abiola Adesina says the contract of the original contractor was terminated and new contractors were appointed to finish the project.

The outstanding work includes the installation of electrical wiring, fire detection, telecommunication, data and PABX services, air-conditioning and cold room equipment, medical gas supply and a standby generator.

“These subcontractors have already been appointed by the ministry of health and social services,” Adesina said.

He added that the installations can only start once the electrical wiring is complete. There is still no fixed completion date.

Adesina said once completed, the Nkurenkuru clinic is targeted to serve as the Kavango West Region's coronavirus isolation facility.

Kavango West health woes

Over the years top national and regional leaders have visited the project and demanded that it be completed, yet nothing happened after their visits, which left residents furious.

In 2017, former vice-president Nicky Iyambo visited the project and appealed that it be completed.

Last year, health minister Kalumbi Shangula toured the Kavango West Region and visited the Nkurenkuru Primary Health Care Clinic project.

In 2014, former president Hifikepunye Pohamba officiated at the ground-breaking for the envisaged Nkurenkuru District Hospital.

That project is yet to be completed and much of the work is still outstanding.

For the past four years, Kavango West governor Sirkka Ausiku has appealed for the completion of the clinic in her State of the Region Address.

“The region is appealing to the ministry to complete the Nkurenkuru healthcare clinic and open it to the public,” Ausiku said in her 2018 address.

Earlier this month, Ausiku again appealed to the government to complete the healthcare facilities in her region.

“The region has 28 health facilities. As highlighted before, the construction of the district hospital was put on hold, while the completion of the Nkurenkuru Health Centre and Gcaruhwa Clinic is yet to be done. The region is once again appealing to the ministry to complete these unfinished projects without further delay,” Ausiku said.
