The runway at Ondangwa Airport is also being rehabilitated to the tune of N$208 million to ensure world-class safety and security at the airport.
Ondangwa airport is important in facilitating air travel to northern Namibia.
According to the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) air traffic has been increasing and chances are high it will grow further due to the upgrades at the airport.
The new terminal allows more commercial activity at the airport and was designed to allow more local participation through private-public partnerships.
The decision to upgrade the airport is primarily to increase commercial activities at the airport, which serves five regions with the highest population in Namibia.
It is also in line with the NAC’s 2014-2017 Strategic Plan, which is revenue driven.
According to NAC there is overwhelming interest from local businesspeople to be involved in the commercial activities at the airport.
The potential of the airport is huge and everyone wants to have a piece of it, and that is exactly what it is driving towards.
It will offer a variety of commercial facilities such as car rental, curio shops, restaurants and mobile services for travellers’ convenience.
The airport is ideally located, close to the Ruacana Falls and the world-famous Etosha National Park.
Fuel facilities have also been refurbished to serve other African airlines that refuel at Ondangwa.
NAC anticipates a great deal of tourism activity in the North due to the upgrade of the Ondangwa Airport.
