FNB resuscitates Oshakati hospital

25 September 2019 | Health

Health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula says the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital's resuscitation committee had not been functioning due to lack of training equipment, but thanks to First National Bank (FNB) Namibia, the committee will now be functional.

The bank, through the FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust, recently donated resuscitation training equipment worth N$350 000.

Hospital medical superintendent Dr Vizkaya Amutenya said the donation is very crucial, because they are a teaching hospital for medical students and interns, among others.

The resuscitation equipment will be used to inflate the lungs of unconscious patients to keep them oxygenated and breathing.

FNB retail banking executive officer Nangula Kauluma said the donation reaffirms that the bank is deeply invested in the health and well-being of the Namibian nation.

“We are dependent on nurses and doctors to provide their skills and expertise, as part of healthcare. We therefore believe that our nurses and doctors at Oshakati hospital will now have equipment to resuscitate patients who are in a critical condition.

“It furthermore demonstrates our commitment towards the numerous government healthcare programmes countrywide,” said Kauluma.

Shangula lauded the bank, saying the resuscitation committee was not functional due to a lack of training equipment.

“The hospital receives a number of emergency cases that require resuscitation. With this equipment, the hospital will be able to train our healthcare workers to provide timely and effective resuscitation to needy patients,” the health minister said.

“I am appealing to corporate Namibia and our partners in health to follow this good example shown by FNB. I maintain that health provision is a shared responsibility. It is everybody's business and not only the responsibility of the ministry of health.”
